Fort Moultrie's history covers 171 years of seacoast defense, including the first decisive victory in the American Revolution and the firing onto Fort Sumter during the first battle of the Civil War. The third Fort Moultrie, built in 1809, stands today. By touring the fort, visitors can see how coastal defenses have evolved.
Directions
Plane - Charleston, South Carolina is a major destination city and is served by several airlines. Taxis are readily available from the airport. Both US I-26 and US I-526 lead to US-17, and US-17 leads to SC-703. Take US-17 North to Mt. Pleasant and turn right onto SC-703. At Sullivan's Island, turn right onto Middle Street. The fort is 1.5 miles from that intersection.
